Chapter 121 Icarus' Tears
[[ Congratulations on completing the hidden achievement: The One Above All.
Mission Description: Take first place in a vestige-smith registration exam.
Rewards: Random precious materials x10, Special ability card x1]]
The notification was pleasing, however, it wasn't that notification that got Lucas'attention but the next one.
[[ Congratulations to the host for leveling up the system. Inventory expansion takes place. One new system ability granted. Host can now earn system coins per mission.
Rewarding 10 system coins. One drop of Icarus' Tears. ]]
'Finally.' Lucas felt glad.
It had been almost a month since the previous time the system had levelled up, which also happened to be its first. With this, the system was now level 2, and that meant three levels left until level 5, which was a turning point for Lucas.
'In this one month, I've four missions; one of those was forced, two were in line with its programming or so the system would. As for the last, it was actually a hidden achievement. The levelling requirement is either dependent on the number of missions or how many experience points the system gets from them, if any at all.' Lucas analysed.
For so long, Lucas had been trying to figure out how to level the system up faster, but the system didn't give him any information on that except to keep completing missions. What's worse was that there was no progress bar, so Lucas couldn't monitor his progress or witness the value of his efforts.
He had almost given up and decided to just keep going along with the system, but this experience helped him to have a slight understanding about how things worked.
'A hidden achievement. If I'm correct, the experience points the system gains from this should be more, seeing as the rewards are quite different from the usual.'
Lucas had ignored the description of the hidden achievement as he felt nothing about it. First in the exams? That was a given.
Although he wasn't confident about the theoretical exam, when Lucas had stepped in for it, he was surprised it wasn't as difficult as he had expected. Some of the laws, principles and practices were similar to those on Earth and even his first world's. However, there were still those Lucas knew nothing about, which made him not confident about his result.
As for the practical exam, if Lucas took second place, who would dare take first place?
Even if he had held back and used the exam as an opportunity to experiment, the stellar energy purity of the Grade 1 vestige Lucas made was on another level. Based on vestige duel standards, it had an Alpha reading Grade 1 with a final class reading of Median Orange, which meant it was close to a premium model vestige. Premium models began from a final class reading of Deep Orange and above.
For these first-timers and even the examinees who knew how to make a Grade 1 vestige, creating something on the level of Orange was a dream. Even the best amongst them could barely achieve a standard of Deep Red.
With such a wide margin in the most important aspect of the exams, it would be easy for Lucas to close the gap created in the theoretical exam and snatch first place. As such, he never worried about it. Instead, he had his interest on the rewards from the notifications.
'Special ability card?'
Lucas opened his inventory and saw a card much like the Bronze Grade card, but of a different colour and design.
A short detailed description of the card appeared once he tapped on it.
[[ Special Ability Card: For a limited time, possess a random superpower with limited effects. ]]
In the next second, Lucas ignored the card and searched for the other item.
A random superpower with limited effects? That could be good or bad. If anything, Lucas felt it was almost useless.
What if he was in a near-death scenario and the random superpower was the ability to tell good jokes? Whose life could that save?
Turning his to the other rewards, Lucas was now pleased.
The ten random items all seemed to glow from his inventory screen and they possessed a strange energy around them. They were definitely valuable materials and good for vestige-smithing. Some might even be better than the Purple Iridium ingots he had, and those almost cost Lucas his life.
'That reminds me, I need to pay those guys back for all the special treatment.' Lucas thought.
The next item he checked out were the system coins.Nôv(el)B\\jnn
When Lucas had first levelled up the system, he had unlocked the system shop. The system shop was a feature tied to his system. On the shop were special items with unique properties that Lucas could purchase. However, he needed system coins to do so, but there was no way to earn them. Seeing the notification and the coins in his inventory, Lucas finally understood.
Based on the prices in the store, ten system coins could get Lucas a few items there.
The final physical reward Lucas received from the system was the unique item called Icarus' Tears, of which he only got a single drop.
Glancing at the description for the item, Lucas almost stumbled despite standing.
'This, this, damn!'
Lucas couldn't believe his eyes.
[[ Icarus' Tears: A unique material that can be used to create heaven-defying items, for instance, a revival drug, or a potion to change one's physical condition. Consuming in its raw form would grant the user a random percentage of gaining a mysterious superpower related to transcendence. ]]
The contents of the description tab was breathtaking, but what caught Lucas' eyes was a certain phrase: a potion to change one's physical condition.
This was a material that could be used to fix Lucas' special condition. Continue reading at empire
Suddenly, Lucas had a thought. To confirm this, he asked the system.
'System, is this what you meant by waiting until level 5? After each level, I would get a material to make the potion, am I right?'
"Host has finally unlocked his inner wisdom. Yes." The system responded.
Lucas' lips twitched at those words, but he understood that it was the system's way of telling him that he was right. There were three more levels to go which meant three more materials needed to make the potion.
However, Lucas was somewhat tempted by the last line. Consuming the drop of Icarus' Tears would grant him a mystic superpower, and with how the superpower is said to be related to transcendence, it definitely wasn't an ordinary one.
Nonetheless, Lucas held back the temptation. Gaining the ability to use stellar energy was more important than having a random superpower. With stellar refinement, he would eventually wield a superpower once he reached the tenth level.
While he was thinking this, Lucas overheard a few shouts.
'It seems like the result has been released.' Lucas thought as he moved his line of sight from the invisible system interface to a hologram that was recently projected in the air.
"What the fuck?"
