Extra, Chapter 464: Ello? (2)

Kang Chan heard rough footsteps, the clanking of rifles, and branches breaking as he killed the sniper. No one said anything about it, but he and the two men with him knew that a large army was approaching.

Their enemies had waited for the snipers in the forest to kill him. The fact that they were now charging in meant Kang Chan had dealt with all of the snipers.

Still, if the three tried to fight that many enemies here, they would only sacrifice themselves in vain.

“We’re heading back to the unit!” Kang Chan ordered. He then quickly made his way to the other soldiers.

Rustle! Rustle!

It didn’t matter if they made noises now. Their enemies’ advance was far noisier than they could ever be.

Despite having just finished a nerve-wracking three-hour search, Kang Chan ran as fast as he could. He ignored the crumbling dirt, the leaves scratching his face, and the branches getting tangled with his feet.

Clank. Clank.

“Haah! Haah! Haah! Haah!”

Although Éiric and Mazani gasped for breath as they sprinted for about thirty minutes, running on empty was a hundred times better than death.

Tap tap!

Up ahead, they heard their colleagues tapping their rifles to confirm their identities.

“Mont! Smithen! Get ready for battle!” Kang Chan shouted. He then climbed to a higher ground.

Click! Click!

The soldiers, who had aimed in Kang Chan’s direction just to be safe, quickly lowered their rifles as soon as they saw him.

Thud! Thud!

Haah! Haah!

Breathing heavily, the exhausted Éiric and Mazani sprawled out on the ground behind the other soldiers.

“Give me some water!” Kang Chan yelled.

A soldier quickly did as instructed.

After drinking some of it, he quickly said, “I believe we have killed all of their snipers, but we’re not completely sure yet. However, a huge group of hostiles is approaching us. I need you all to hold your position unless ordered otherwise.”

Rustle! Rattle! Clunk! Clank!

Their enemies’ blatant approach continued.

The moonlight wasn’t that bright, which made their surrounding appear even darker.

The shroud of the night was much more advantageous to their enemies. After all, they knew the area better. They also had far superior numbers.

Considering sniper teams were waiting for them and enemies responded so quickly, Kang Chan couldn’t help but think that information about him and his men had been leaked.

“Captain,” Montechelle whispered, which likely meant that he could already see the enemies in his scope.

“When the battle starts, kill those with an RPG or grenades first. Take out those who look or act like high-ranking rebels as well,” Kang Chan ordered.

“Oui,” Montechelle briefly answered.

Except for Dayeru, who was right next to him, everyone had experience and could understand Kang Chan.

“Daye,” Kang Chan called.

Dayeru quickly looked at him.

“No matter what happens…” Kang Chan made a cutthroat gesture.

He spoke in Korean. Continuing to speak in French, which Dayeru didn’t want to hear, would only give both of them a headache.

Clatter! Rustle!

The enemies formed an encirclement around Kang Chan and his men.

There were so many enemies that Kang Chan would believe it if he was told that all of Gorko’s rebels had come here. Their enemies probably approached them so noisily because of their massive numbers, too.

Goddamn it!

Dumbfounded, Kang Chan cursed deep down. Even though he had heard that the rebels were stupid, he never expected them to wear white clothes at night.

Had the rebels approached them with lanterns instead, Kang Chan and his men would’ve been blinded by the light. Instead, they chose to basically become walking targets.

People like them had scattered throughout Africa to behead the powerless natives, light them on fire, and subject the women to various cruelties all because the natives were weaker than them despite believing in the same religion.

Kang Chan pointed his rifle at the enemies and waited.

Close-quarters combat was completely different from what people imagined them to be. Dirt and trees would explode right in front of them, and the same could be said for the head, neck, or chest of enemies acting out and leaning forward so much that they exposed themselves. After seeing all of that, those who didn’t have strong guts would find it hard to aim at their enemies again.

That was why a lot of soldiers shot their enemies while ducking; they wanted to avoid seeing them die.

However, that was also the reason soldiers had to train. Even if they didn’t intend to, participating in combat naturally allowed them to show the result of their training.

The enemies carefully approached them now. They looked as if they were searching the mountain.

Kang Chan smirked.

The enemies had black vests over their white clothes and were armed with AK-47s. They also wore turbans.

Only soldiers with a lot of experience or born suited for situations like this could join special forces units.

No matter how low those rebels crouched, special forces soldiers would still be skilled enough to shoot their protruding shoulders, heads, and any other body part.

Kang Chan quickly looked at Dayeru. He felt somewhat reassured once he saw Daye pointing his rifle with spiteful eyes.

Even though the rebels up ahead were now right below them, Kang Chan and his men continued to wait for them to come closer.

More rebels continued to approach; there seemed to be no end to them.

How many did they bring here?

Clatter!

Their enemies were now only twenty meters away. It would become problematic if they waited any longer and the enemies rushed toward them all at once.

Kang Chan placed his index finger on the trigger. They didn’t know when this battle would end, but it would begin the moment he pulled the trigger.

Soon, he fired the first shot.

Bang!

Following his lead, his men began to open fire as well.

The rebels jumped and hid behind the trees, got down on the ground, or hid their heads behind rocks. Nevertheless, Kang Chan and his men took them all down.

While Kang Chan and his men killed the enemies right in front of them, the hostiles in the distance returned fire, likely not wanting to miss this opportunity.

However, the 11th unit was already positioned behind great cover. The rebels weren’t that skilled either, making the situation less tense than it sounded.

“Keep an eye out for more snipers!” Kang Chan shouted from behind a tree.

He pulled out a magazine from his vest pocket and reloaded his gun.

Click! Clank!

Kang Chan then examined his surroundings, looking for any other approaching enemies.

Next to him, Dayeru stood up and shot their enemies.

Kang Chan had heard that this was Dayeru’s first battle, yet the man showed no fear. After shooting a couple of rounds one at a time, he hid back behind a low hill.

“Daye!”

Dayeru quickly looked at Kang Chan. His eyes were glinting so much that he looked as if he would shoot Kang Chan as well.

Kang Chan made the letter U with his index finger. If they just constantly peeked and fired from one spot, their enemies would eventually just start waiting for them to pop out.

Even if these rebels were all worthless, the sniper who had killed Haller could be among them.

Kang Chan tapped his magazine toward Dayeru.

Dayeru nodded. He took out a magazine from his pocket and replaced the one in his rifle.

Clank!

They were ready to rejoin the battle now.

Ratatatat! Bang bang! Ratatatat! Bang!

The enemies didn’t stop shooting at them.

They’re either shooting at us to protect the rebels in front of us or…

Kang Chan looked at the top of the ridge. They had slightly descended from the path they walked on, so he couldn’t see what was on the other side of it.

The enemies were consistently shooting the area in front of Kang Chan and above the ridge.

In some ways, they had poor accuracy, but they could also be preventing Kang Chan and his men from climbing past the ridge and escaping. However, what if some enemies were climbing the ridge from the other side to attack them in multiple directions as well?

Kang Chan immediately felt a chill run down his spine. He discretely stood up.

“Aim at the direction some of the rebels are shooting from! On my command, open fire at the same time!” Kang Chan ordered.

It was probably around midnight by now.

“Cover me!” Kang Chan yelled.

Boom! Boom! Bang! Bang! Bang!

As the soldiers simultaneously opened fire, Kang Chan ran toward the ridge right above them.

Whoosh!

He then threw himself to the hill in front of him and descended to the other side.

Kang Chan landed on top of twigs and roots, causing them to break and rustle loudly. Below him, people in white clothes were advancing toward his unit’s position.

Keeping a wide stance for stability, he began shooting at the rebels.

Click! Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang!

He immediately eliminated the enemies right in front of him. Unfortunately, as he had expected, a lot of rebels were approaching from this side of the ridge as well. To make matters worse, they had spread out to prevent his unit from escaping.

Pew! Pew! Pew! Pew!

As Kang Chan continued to shoot down the enemies, a buff man roughly threw himself to the same hill. He skidded down until he reached Kang Chan.

Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang!

They didn’t have time to talk, though. Kang Chan and Dayeru relentlessly defended their position against the enemies around them. Behind them, they could hear his men fighting a ferocious battle.

Now that Kang Chan and his men had caught on to their enemy’s plan to attack from this side of the ridge, the rebels on the other side seemed to have resumed their charge.

The loud gunshots from the forest rang all the way into Mahujani’s cave.

Since even the high-ranking rebels went out to the frontlines, only Mahujani was inside it.

As he sighed quietly, a high-ranking rebel urgently ran inside.

“We have completely surrounded them, sir!”

“How are they reacting to our attack?” Mahujani still sounded calm.

“Unfortunately, they’ve caught on to our plan to attack from the other side of the ridge. They’ve mounted a strong defense!”

Hmm!

There was a reason that Asian commander was called a monster. Still, how was Mahujani supposed to believe that the man managed to learn about the snipers waiting for him, find and kill all the snipers, and even figure out that they were trying to pincer them from the other side of the ridge?

Anger filled Mahujani’s eyes. “Start the second phase of our plan. We have to kill and behead that monster and his subordinates no matter what.”

“Yes, sir!” the high-ranking rebel answered firmly before running out of the cave.

If his two hundred warriors couldn’t even kill twelve men, how could they call themselves warriors or Mahujania a commander?

Mahujani tightly clenched his teeth and waited to hear the outcome of the battle.

***

The sun was down.

Du du du du du du! Du du du! Du du du du du du!

Armored vehicles pushed their way up the mountain, and five Foreign Legion companies followed suit.

Du du du! Ta da dang! Ta da da dang!

The soldiers returned fire whenever enemies shot them. Each time, their bullets’ empty cartridges fell loudly on the rocks.

Clank! Clang! Clank!

Vrooom! Ratatatat! Vrooom! Ratatatat!

Amid the intense firefight, the Foreign Legion soldiers continued to follow the armored vehicles.

Sharlan remained inside the command center—which was just a makeshift building.

Whenever they received information through the radio, he marked the location on the map in front of him.

“We have secured our first target location, sir,” a soldier reported.

He approached Sharlan and moved the flag that symbolized the armored vehicles and a triangle that symbolized the two companies.

“What about our casualties?” Sharlan asked.

“According to their reports, the enemies’ resistance is unexpectedly weak. Only two of our men are seriously wounded.”

Sharlan looked at the terrain that the armored vehicles would soon reach. It was a mountainous area, which meant it wouldn’t be able to go any further. That was where Kang Chan and his men were.

“What about the 11th unit?” Sharlan asked again.

“We haven’t heard from them yet, sir.”

Sharlan briefly nodded. The British intelligence bureau was certainly very capable. Not only did they deploy snipers to kill Kang Chan, but they also made almost all of Mahujani’s troops focus on Kang Chan’s unit.

Sharlan looked at the map with a heavy expression.

The more the damn Asian commander accomplished, the more the 11th unit was assigned and dispatched to dangerous areas.

Like magic, the DGSE always seemed to figure out the area that the British intelligence bureau had told Sharlan. Moreover, Kang Chan’s unit was assigned to the mission each time—almost as if it was already a given.

If only that damn Asian commander obeyed me half as often as Smithen.

Sharlan frowned.

I can’t believe he’s going against orders to return to the base just to save his men!

A sniper could have made Kang Chan’s head explode. If not, then the rebels could have already gotten to him.

Sharlan sighed. Thinking of his shares with Gong Te Automobile and the savings account in the Paribas bank, he softly suppressed his conscience.

***

Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang!

The enemies that had targeted the other side of the ridge fell back a couple of meters.

Click! Clank!

Kang Chan changed magazines first. Once he was done, Dayeru took his turn to reload.n/ô/vel/b//jn dot c//om

‘What are these fuckers up to?’

The rebels who had been continuously shooting at them suddenly stopped and looked for cover.

It was unlikely that they simply ran out of bullets.

Looking around the back, Kang Chan’s heart began to pound against his chest.
