Chapter 312: Fainted
Chapter 312: Fainted
Once they left the slum, Long Yu whispered, "It looks like their target is Li Tianyu."
Yao Ran nodded, then asked, "Do you think they are here to capture Captain Li as an experiment subject?"
"I'm not sure," Long Yu replied, frowning.
"Li Tianyu mentioned he is investigating the experiments and that he gained his ability due to deformation. His case is different from the early mutated ability users, which probably makes him highly valuable for experimentation."
Yao Ran's eyes turned cold when she listened to Long Yu's guess. Clenching her fists, she said, "If they are truly using humans as test subjects, we should stop helping them for now. I don't want to get involved with this base or its senior officers until we find out everything."
Long Yu, aware of her painful past, didn't defend the military.
Instead, he nodded and said, "I will support your decision. But first, we should return to the shelter and check on our friends. I'm worried they might have been affected by the nuclear radiation."
Thinking of her friends, Yao Ran calmed down and agreed. "Alright."
After taking their truck from the barracks' parking lot, Long Yu and Yao Ran left the Juncheng Military Base.
Sitting in the passenger seat, Yao Ran took out a radiation detector from her space and checked the air's radiation levels. Seeing the number displayed on the screen, her expression darkened.
"The radiation level has increased by 31 mSv," she said.
Hearing this, Long Yu's face grew serious. After a brief silence, he asked, "Ran Ran, what were you doing in your previous life when the nuclear radiation spread? How did you get through the radiation phase at that time?"
Yao Ran tried to recall, but her mind remained blank. Because of this, she suddenly felt a sharp pain in her head. Frowning, she tried to endure the pain, but Long Yu noticed immediately.
"What's wrong?" he asked worriedly.
Shaking her head, she replied, "My head hurts when I try to remember my previous life." Long Yu's heart sank at her words.
Clenching the steering wheel tightly, he recalled a report he had found in one of The Ark's secret laboratories about a special army they were attempting to create. The thought that Yao Ran might have been one of their candidates filled him with anger and hatred.
Noticing the shift in his mood, Yao Ran put away the radiation detector and asked, "A Yu, what's wrong?"
Snapped out of his thoughts by her worried voice, Long Yu gave her a gentle smile and said, "It's nothing. If you can't remember, then don't force yourself to recall those memories." Yao Ran nodded, "Mhm. Do you know what happens when nuclear radiation spreads?" Long Yu thought for a moment before replying, "The radiation levels will keep rising for three months. During that time, more than half the survivors died from radiation poisoning." "I was lucky. I found the shelter with my team, and we hid there for two months before coming out. The shelter is the one we live in now."
"Back then, it didn't have radiation protection, so we suffered from radiation poisoning. I lost many comrades in those two months."
"Those of us who survived developed abilities, but only a few of us managed to avoid deformities because we had already awakened our powers before the radiation spread. For those who gained abilities afterward, including ordinary survivors, deformities were inevitable."
"When the radiation in the air had lowered to normal levels, most humans had already suffered from deformities. Even the babies born afterward often died young or were born with deformities."
Listening to his explanation, Yao Ran asked, "So, in the future, will all humans have deformed bodies?"
Long Yu nodded, then paused before asking, "Ran Ran, do you really not remember anything about the world after the mutation era?"
Yao Ran was stunned for a moment before responding, "I remember mutant animals, plants, and even sea monsters. But other than that, my memories are fragmented. I vaguely recall deformed, monstrous creatures, but I'm not sure if those are real or just my imagination."
As she spoke, she suddenly stopped, and then her face turned pale. The next second, she covered her head, breaking out in cold sweat, and groaned in pain.
Startled by her sudden condition, Long Yu quickly pulled the truck over to the roadside and turned off the engine. Grasping her cold hands, he said urgently, "Ran Ran, look at me."n/o/vel/b//in dot c//om
Yao Ran raised her eyes to meet his and asked, "A Yu, I think they really did something to my brain. What did they do to me? A Yu, I'm scared."
Seeing her trembling in fear, Long Yu clenched his jaw and pulled her into his embrace. Hugging her tightly, he patted her back gently and said, "Don't be afraid. I'm here. No matter what happened before, you are safe now. I won't let them hurt you again."
Yao Ran's eyes reddened at his words, and she buried her face in his chest. Just as the pain in her head began to subside, it suddenly surged back with unbearable intensity. Clutching his clothes tightly, she said with difficulty, "A Yu... my head... it hurts...so mu-"
Before she could say more, her sight darkened, and she fainted. Startled, Long Yu called out in panic, "Ran Ran! What's wrong with you? Ran Ran!"
Seeing her pale complexion, he quickly took a bottle of lake water from his backpack and tried to feed it to her. When the water spilled down her lips, he made a quick decision. Long Yu took a mouthful of lake water, lowered his head, and then fed it to her mouth-to-mouth. After repeating the process three times, he noticed her complexion improving slightly. Long Yu helped her sit back in her seat, fastened her seatbelt, and restarted the engine. Without wasting another moment, he drove as fast as he could back to the air raid shelter.
Driving tirelessly without stopping while dealing with the mutant animals along the way, they reached the shelter just before dawn.
