Chapter 106 Can't Catch A Break!
Hugo's face was as dark as a thundercloud, his brows furrowed so tightly that it looked like they might fuse together.
Beads of sweat trickled down his temple as his fingers tightened on the plastic arcade gun. His gaze was cold, intense—laser-focused on the screen in front of him.
His breathing was shallow, his lips pressed into a thin line. To anyone passing by, he looked like a man on a life or death mission.
But in reality, Hugo was staring down the most frustratingly difficult target in the history of arcade games—a tiny, far-off enemy that popped up for just a fraction of a second before disappearing.
The words "THIRD ROUND" flashed across the top of the screen, mocking him. This wasn't just a game anymore. It was personal.
"Come on…" he muttered under his breath, squinting at the screen. He steadied the gun, his entire body trembling from the pressure.
'This is it. My moment of glory. If I hit this target, Lily will think I'm a legend.'
The screen beeped. The target appeared—a tiny dot in the distance, barely visible. Hugo pulled the trigger.
Missed.

"ARGH!" Hugo groaned, almost slamming the gun down. He and Lily were still trailing behind Collins and Tily by an embarrassing amount of points and it was all due to his stubbornness.
Every attempt to hit this one target had ended in disaster, and now Collins was standing smugly beside him, his grin wide enough to rival the Cheshire Cat's.
"Having trouble there, buddy?" Collins asked, casually picking up his own gun.
"Oh, shut it, Collins," Hugo snapped, his face growing even darker.
Collins just smirked. Without even aiming properly, he fired a shot. The screen flashed. Direct hit.
"Seriously?!" Hugo yelled, his jaw dropping.
Tily clapped her hands, cheering loudly. "Woo! That's my Collins! You're so good at this!"
"Yeah, yeah, rub it in," Hugo muttered. He turned to Lily, who was standing beside him with her arms crossed, trying to look angry but failing miserably. Her lips were twitching, barely holding back a smile.
"You know, this is all your fault," Hugo said, his voice playfully accusing.
"My fault?" Lily raised an eyebrow, pretending to be offended. "How exactly is this my fault?"
"Well, clearly your presence is distracting me," Hugo replied with a dramatic sigh. "How can I focus on shooting when I have someone as stunning as you standing beside me?"
Lily rolled her eyes but giggled despite herself. "Nice try, Hugo. Maybe you're just bad at this game."
"Ouch." Hugo clutched his chest like she'd stabbed him. "That hurt, Lily. That really hurt." Then his expression turned mischievous. "How about we make a bet, then?"
Lily tilted her head, curious. "A bet?"
"Yeah." Hugo leaned in slightly, lowering his voice. "If I hit that impossible target on my last shot, you owe me… a kiss."
Lily's eyes widened slightly, her cheeks turning pink. But to Hugo's surprise, she didn't back away. Instead, she smirked and said, "Fine. But if you miss, I get to tease you about it for the rest of the night."
Hugo's confidence wavered for a split second. 'A kiss? No pressure, right? Just the single most important moment of my life so far. Totally normal. Not like I'm nervous or anything.'
But then he remembered Sanchez's advice: One dates with a lot of activities, it might be tricky to light up that spark of sexual tension.
But doing it is actually very simple. Use bets to your advantage. Create tension. Build it up. Make the stakes exciting. Girls love that.
"Deal," Hugo said, straightening up. He cracked his knuckles, then his neck, exaggerating each movement like a seasoned action hero preparing for the ultimate showdown. "Alright. Watch and learn."
Lily giggled, stepping back to give him space.
Hugo gripped the gun tightly, narrowing his eyes at the screen. The target appeared. Time slowed.
His finger hovered over the trigger, every muscle in his body tensed. He took a deep breath, blocked out all the noise, and fired.
The screen flashed.
Missed.
Hugo stared at the screen, his mouth hanging open. "No… no, no, no. That didn't just happen."
Collins burst out laughing, practically doubling over. "Oh man, Hugo! That was your big moment, and you blew it!"
Tily joined in, giggling uncontrollably.
Hugo turned to Lily, rubbing the back of his neck sheepishly. "I guess I'm just cursed, huh?" he said with a weak laugh. "Maybe I should stick to bowling."
Lily rolled her eyes again but stepped closer, her blush deepening. "You're such a dork," she said softly. Then, before Hugo could react, she leaned in and kissed him on the lips.
Hugo froze. His brain short-circuited. 'Did that just happen? Am I dreaming? Is this real life?'
Collins, who had been mid-laugh, stopped abruptly, his eyes widening. "Wait. What? Did she just—?"
"Let's move on to the next game," Lily said cheerfully, taking Hugo's hand and pulling him toward another machine.
Hugo followed her, his legs feeling like jelly. Inside, he was doing mental backflips. 'She kissed me. She actually kissed me. Take that, bad luck!'
But as they played the next few games, Hugo's earlier high began to wear off. He and Lily kept losing.
Over and over. Every single game was a disaster. Whether it was air hockey, racing games, or whack-a-mole, they just couldn't catch a break. Enjoy exclusive chapters from empire
"It's fine, really," Lily said after their latest failure, trying to sound upbeat. But Hugo could see the slight disappointment in her eyes.
'It's not fine!' Hugo screamed internally. 'If we leave this arcade without winning at least one game, she'll think we're a hopeless team! And if she's not in a good mood, there's no way I'll make any progress tonight!'
His panic reached new heights as he frantically scanned the arcade for a game—any game—they could win.
This wasn't just about having fun anymore. This was about survival. And Hugo was determined not to let his bad luck ruin everything.
