Vol. 3 - Chapter 139 - Katariona Enjoys Afternoon Tea in the Garden
After a day of shopping, we went to enjoy afternoon tea at a nearby hotel run by the Dukes of Villiersberg, which caters to international visitors.
"You have reserved the entire garden for today," explained the hotel's manager, "There is no one here but us."
This hotel has a special garden called the "Rosette Garden," which is so popular that there is usually a waiting list for reservations.
This afternoon tea was originally proposed by Rosette Linde Villiersberg, the wife of the previous Duke of Villiersberg. In other words, she is Tria's great-grandmother.
It is said that Madame Rosette was fond of having afternoon tea in the garden, which is why the hotel's garden is named after her.
"How did you manage to rent it out? Is the Duke of Villiersberg weak when it comes to requests from his daughters?"
Angel teased Tria, who then pinched Angel's cheek.
Apparently, Tria asked her father, the Duke of Villiersberg, for a favor.
"It is the first time I have ever done this," Tria said, "You've never been here before, have you, Rio?"
Chris asked me, looking at the elegant entrance.
"That's right. I've always wanted to visit, but ......"
My mother and I have been to the other lounge, but I have never seen the garden.
"It's a gorgeous place. The cakes must be delicious. And yet I am in a cat form."
Leon, in cat form, mumbled and complained telepathically.
"Don't complain! This hotel does take-out pastries, so I'll order some for you."
"What!? Is that true? I'll bring you back a whole cake as a souvenir!"
"...... got it."
I knew he would say so, because Leon is a foodie.
"Miss Victoria. We have been waiting for you. If I may, I will show you the way, please."
"Yes. We're counting on you."
A mature man who appeared to be the hotel manager came out at the entrance and led us into the hotel.
The interior of the hotel, decorated with elegant furniture, reminded me of a nobleman's mansion.
"Is the china in the cabinet from the Eschen Empire? It's lovely."
The white porcelain ware was painted in green and red, with gold foil stamping as decoration.
"You know your china very well," he said, "This is a piece of porcelain made in the workshop of the Eschen imperial family, called Twin Lotus Studio."
The manager smiled in admiration.
I should have expected this from Chris. As a princess, she has seen artifacts from many different countries, so she has a discerning eye.
"In our hotel, I personally go out to purchase items for the purpose of pleasing the eyes of our guests," he said.
"Is this what you call hospitality? There are a lot of counterfeit Twin Lotus Studio ceramics out there.''
Leon cheekily looked at the porcelain. Incidentally, they said prior permission was obtained to take Leon, in his cat form, inside.
"Is that so? Is this china authentic?"
"It's the real thing. He has a discerning eye."
Tria gave a chuckle.
"Sebas loves his chinaware, doesn't he? Even when he was at home, he enjoyed polishing dishes."
It seems that the manager is called Sebas-san. According to Tria, he was originally a member of the Duke of Villiersberg's family, and was appointed manager of this hotel when he resigned.
"When I polish the dishes, they come alive and shine," he said, "I look forward to seeing that. ...... Ahem! Such things are not important. Well, here we are at the "Rosette Garden"!"
I am sure Sebas-san is the type of person who gets passionate when he starts talking about dishware.
"As you requested, we have prepared a table on the terrace. The Rosette Garden is a secluded garden, suitable for a secret tea party."
Sebas-san winked at us with a mischievous smile. He is a very cute old man.
"Please make yourselves at home and I will bring you your afternoon tea set."
Sebas-san bowed and left the terrace with graceful steps.
His refined manners could only have come from a family retainer in the service of an aristocratic mansion.
"I thought he was a gentleman of elegance and romance, but he has a mischievous spirit, doesn't he? I always wanted such a family retainer. My own family retainer nags too much."
Angel's family's, the Marquess of Ashbury, supposedly has a butler who tends to nag.n/o/vel/b//in dot c//om
In our family, we don't have a retainer. The servants are managed by Marie's father, Rufus, the chief butler. He used to be a nobleman, so he is practically like a family retainer.
"Sebas-san was very popular even when he was working for our family. He takes good care of us and is very kind. Sometimes when dishes are involved, he can be a bit... ......"
We were mainly talking about Sebas-san until he brought us an afternoon tea set.
The afternoon tea set consisted of sandwiches, cakes, macaroons, scones, and other sweets on plates set on a silver three-tier stand.
The tea was served in a choice of twenty-five different flavors, and refills were free.
"We have heard that this cat is a holy beast, so we did not prepare any special animal food for it. I have heard that sacred beasts eat the same food as humans, so you can give them whatever you like."
The snacks are heaped on more than I can eat, so that shouldn't be a problem.
"Sebas seems to be quite a thoughtful guy,"
Leon is already drooling with the sweets in front of him.
"I see you liked it, kitty. Well then, have a good time."
Sebas-san looked at Leon with smiling eyes, bowed, and left the terrace.
I put some sweets on a plate and Leon started to eat them as if he had been waiting for me.
"Leon likes sweets? Our Hawk prefers meat."
The Marquis de Ashbury's Holy Beast, Hawk, had fought with him during first-year orientation.
He usually looks like a white hawk but is actually a griffon.
In general, he only misses Marguerite-sama, but I consider him a reliable Holy Beast who will listen to me if I ask him to.
"Leon is a gourmand and will eat anything."
"Rio, give me another one. I want a salmon sandwich, banana cake and raisin scones. But I'd appreciate a serving of all kinds."
"There won't be enough for everyone. All kinds will not do. No more than two at a time. And eat slowly!"
In Leon's case, food may be quantity over quality.
"Ugh! I understand. So give me a refill."
A pair of misty eyes stared at me. Crap! So cute!
"Leon-chan. I'm so happy to see you. If you don't have enough, you can have some of mine."
Tria placed her plate in front of Leon.
"You're going to run out of treats, Tria," I said, "I'll share mine with Leon."
"Don't be afraid to order more when we run out of snacks. Rio."
"Your future sister-in-law is generous."
Leon hummed, sniffed, and bit into a plate of pastries that Tria offered him.
I clasped my hands together in apology to Tria, and she returned a glamorous smile and said, "It's okay."
"Oh, by the way, there's been another engagement called off. Guess who got their engagement broken off?"
Angel smirked and started talking.
"Is it someone I know?"
Chris tilted her head, and I tilted mine as well.
"I think you know her well. Hey, Tria."
"Ye ...... yeah. That's right."
Tria said evasively.
There aren't many S-Class students that Chris and I are familiar with, but who the heck could it be?
"Fufu-! It's Adeline-sama."
""Eh!""
Chris and I overlapped our frank exclamation.
"Adeline-sama had a fiancée!"
"Is that the part that surprises you?"
Angel cackled.
Before the time travel back, Adeline never had a fiancée.
"Adeline is the second daughter, but since her sister had married into a neighboring country, she was supposed to inherit the Marquis de Trevazes by taking a son-in-law," said Angel, "So she got engaged to the third son of a count. Her fiancé apparently fell in love with Charlotte at first sight. He said, "I have found my true love!" I heard that the engagement was called off because of that."
Thanks to this, Adeline-sama's attitude toward Charlotte has become harsher. However, Charlotte cried to His Royal Highness the Crown Prince that she was being abused by Adeline. Hearing that, His Royal Highness the Crown Prince gave a warning to Adeline-sama.
After being pressed by His Royal Highness the Crown Prince, Adeline could no longer touch Charlotte. She was quite upset because she had lost her grip on her.
"I'm sorry to hear that her engagement was broken off.".
Adeline-sama is always saying hateful things, but there is something about her that is hard to hate, as she certainly is a noblewoman.
"So what is she doing now?"
"She said, 'I don't want to see Charlotte-sama's face!' And so she's refusing to go to school."
I understand a little bit how Adeline-sama feels.
Charlotte's involvement has been giving me a mysterious headache.
"I've been having a mysterious headache because of Charlotte's entanglement. Is this an epidemic?"
"Don't be ridiculous, Angel."
Tria looked uneasy even as she chided Angel.
"Your brother will be fine, Tria."
I consoled Tria in a way that cheered her up.
"Yes. I believe in you and in Sieg-sama."
Charlotte's skills do not work on her brother.
Perhaps it is because of the Kirijuin family blood that flows through us siblings.
The Kirijuin family is the bloodline of the gods of the Hinoshima nation, and it is said that they repel evil forces thanks to their special bloodline.
I exchanged a look with Chris. I know that Charlotte is the cause of the unusual number of broken engagements.
"If the school badge is distributed to all students at the Magic Academy, this ridiculous commotion will stop."
Leon reminded me while munching on his raspberry cake as he sent me a telepathic message.
"I hope so."
We don't want any more victims of Charlotte's skills.

T/N: The part about a family retainer was a bit confusing as the term was butler,...but Marie’s dad is their head butler…so I think retainer is more suitable. And the Twin Lotus Studio and ceramics/china terms are a bit confusing if you don’t know much about ceramic. But essentially, chinaware is mostly if not entirely made out of porcelain if I’m not mistaken (might be tho). So referring to things such as porcelain and chinaware is pretty much the same. And I think Sebas-san is only obsessed with china and ceramics…but it might simply be an obsession with any dishware. We’ll find out later if it’s important I guess.
TL: Anyway, hope you guys enjoyed and happy reading~!
