Chapter 837: Guests In My Hallway
So I need to give a fair bit of context first… I had no hand in the planning of my party.
All of my birthday celebrations were surprise parties so while I might know that there would be a party, I don't know what the content of the party would be.
One thing I knew for sure was that there would be a lot of sweets.
But this time, Mary was away from the mansion so I wasn't expecting anything really grand in that area.
That doesn't mean I was expecting the sweets to be crap, mind you, because the sweets the others could make were also really, really good.
That was why I was kind of looking forward to seeing what the party would be like this year, especially since there were more people this time around.
As we were walking through the halls of the mansion, I heard one of the girls let out a gasp behind me.
"That's… That's her!"
I looked behind to see her pointing at the wall beside us.
Turning in the direction that she was pointing at, I realised there was a painting of Mother and I hung up on the wall.
It was painted quite a while ago when I was younger and it was a scene where I was eating sweets while Mother stood behind me.
I didn't even know that Mother got someone to paint that scene until it was put up and it was so embarrassing…
I mean… Just look at me stuffing my face with--

"So… Beautiful…" Someone whispered.
Oh… Well yeah, Mother is indeed quite beautiful isn't she?
"Is that… Madam Nilm, Sister Aster?" One of them asked.
Oh right, most people wouldn't even know what she looked like.
I nodded, "That is indeed my mother. Unfortunately, she's currently away so you wouldn't be able to see her."
Aeta pushed past everyone else to stand in front of me, "Hold on… This is not some elaborate joke right? Are you really… The heir of the Nilm Family?"
"Yes, I am."
"Wait… Then Delmare…"
I looked in the direction of the girls who were still hovering at the very back of the group, "She knew. She had known me for a while already and there are also others who also know who I am. They have been helping me keep this a secret this entire time."
"I… Don't understand… Why? Why did you do what you did with me? If… If you wanted to… You could have just… Just…"
"Just crushed your family and wiped them out from the list of nobles? I guess I could have done that. But I told you before didn't I? I'm not that cruel. Besides, I try to minimise using my family's resources if I can."
"But why? The Nilm family's influence is huge! You could do anything you want here! No one would be able to say no to you!"
I giggled, "Fufufu~ Well, that's also why I tried to hide my real identity all this while, you know? I wanted to attend school normally where I could make friends and get along with people because of who I was and not just because of who my family are."
"I… I guess I can understand that but still… Why?"
"Hmm… I guess if you want a simple answer… Then I would just simply say that it's because it's interesting?"
She blinked at me, as did all the other students who were listening to our conversation.
"It's… Interesting?"
"Yeah. Oh you already know how influential my family is. I don't even need to go to Aerialla Academy just to live the rest of my life in relative comfort. But I do like to challenge myself and also explore and experience what is outside this mansion. That's why I did what I did. If I had told all of you who I really was, would you have treated me like how you did when we first met?"
All of them shook their heads.
I grinned at them, "Exactly."
One of the girls raised their hands, "Sis… Lady Aster! Who… Who else knows your real identity?"
I placed a finger on my lips, "I'll keep that a secret for now. Though I believe it would become quite apparent today anyway so it won't be hard to figure that out~"
Right then, Haddock stepped forward and I noticed that he at least did not look as pale as he did when I first revealed who I was to them.
"As… I mean… Lady Aster… Out of curiosity… What would have happened to us if we had continued to be rude to you?"
Oh wow, straight to that question eh? I was thinking that he might try to avoid bringing that up altogether but I guess that's one of his good points. And by that, I mean that he just faces the problem head on instead of trying to run away from it.
I'm going to guess he got that from Odeta since she does that too…
I was about to tell him that I actually wouldn't do anything to him when Odeta suddenly appeared beside me.
She then cracked her knuckles audibly, "Sister Aster wouldn't do anything to you… But I would."
Haddock gulped at Odeta and I think most of the students here realised that Odeta was one of the people who knew my real identity as a child of the Nilm Family.
"I… I see… Umm… Wait… I remember Big Sis Odeta saying that she met you… Err… Met Lady Aster at Dragon Sanctuary?" Haddock pointed out.
I nodded, "Yes, I was staying at Dragon Sanctuary with Mother for the first few years of my life. I didn't even know about Mother's identity as the Matriarch of the Nilm Family until later."
Another boy gasped, "Wait, wait, wait… Does that mean you got that strong because… You trained yourself on that island?!"
I tilted my head at him, "I did train while I was there, yes."
"Isn't that place filled with dragons?! And you lived there?!"
Odeta puffed up her chest, "Ha! Sister Aster was already killing dragons back then! And she was even doing it by herself too!"
I… Had the help of my Shadow Guards but I guess I don't really need to rebut her on that point.
Quite a number of the students were pretty much gaping at me in shock at this point.
One of them leaned over to the person beside him, "I guess that's expected of the heir of the Nilm Family…"
Surprisingly, after that guy said that, everyone else seemed to recover and started nodding amongst themselves like that explained everything.
Another girl raised her hand, "Umm… Lady Aster? Could I ask about Madam Nilm? What is she like?"
I tapped the side of my cheek, "I'm not really sure how to answer that question… Mother is just Mother to me."
"You don't have any siblings, right?"
"As far as I know, I am Mother's only child so I do not have any siblings."
Another boy raised his hand, "So… What about your father?"
I hesitated slightly, "Umm… Mother said that my birth was a miracle from the gods apparently… Like she prayed to the gods for a child and they had granted her wish with my birth."
As soon as those words left my mouth, I sort of regretted saying it.
Sure enough, my schoolmates started whispering amongst themselves excitedly.
"Ohhh… Lady Aster is a miracle by the Gods!"
"No wonder she's like that!"
"This explains everything!"
"She's an apostle isn't she? She's definitely an apostle!"
Ugh… I'm just glad that they would have their memories wiped after this… I really shouldn't have said that…
Should I tell them about that? Actually, I think I'll just keep that part a secret for now...
I cleared my throat trying to distract everyone away from the topic, "Ahem… Anyway… I think we should move to the party venue."
I continued walking down the corridor towards the grand hall where the party would be held with the rest following behind me.
As we walked down the corridor, I found them still marvelling at the paintings on the walls.
Honestly I've walked through this corridor quite a lot of times so I got used to seeing all those paintings and felt nothing from them. But now that I had outsiders looking at them so closely… I kind of feel a little embarrassed about them…
Mother really liked immortalising our time together in these paintings and displaying them around the mansion…
"Look… She's so cool there…"
"I don't think the painting does her justice…"
"Definitely an apostle…"
I managed to pretend that I didn't notice their hushed whispers and their stares from behind and just continued leading the way towards the hall.
For some reason… This hallway feels longer than I remembered…
I really, really hope they could let me have some sweets first before anything else.
Hmm… Why does it feel like I'm the one being embarrassed right now?
