Chapter 363 Assasins
In the dark night, as usual, Rezen can be seen cultivating. He was attracting the free mana in the atmosphere to his body so that they could nourish him.
Only with hard work and perseverance can a mage continue to progress. Resources are important but still, nothing could beat cultivation itself.
It is impossible to always rely on resources to achieve greatness, proper cultivation must also be followed and adhered to.
As such, just like all mages in the world, Rezen is manually cultivating. In fact, every free time that he has, aside from sleep, he devotes all of his time to cultivation whether it is day or night.
As the mana particles entered Rezen's body, he could feel his cultivation growing stronger little by little. A skyscraper is not built in a day. These small bits of progress once accumulated would be significant.
Suddenly, while Rezen was cultivating, his shadow twisted, and from it, a little snake appeared.
"Master!" Belazark said loudly and before it could even finish its words, Rezen already opened his eyes. Experience tales at empire
A magic circle appeared below him and he injected his mana into it.
"[Borg!]"
Rezen casts the most common defensive small that could be activated as if it was a simple magic of manipulating the elements and not a magic spell with more potent strength.
Bang!
A dagger, a sword, and a lance enhanced with mana crashed against the magic barrier and cracks immediately appeared on it.
However, that gave Rezen enough time to prepare and his magic wand appeared on his hand.
With a wave of Rezen's hand, solar beams flew out but the people that suddenly attacked him blocked his attacks using their own means.
"An isolating barrier?" Rezen muttered as his eyes wandered around his tent. He can sense some sort of barrier that prevents the magic fluctuation and noise inside his tent from being sensed by those outside of it.
It was clearly not a spell from one of his attackers but was achieved using a magic artifact. To come in the middle of the night and attack Rezen, they definitely are not here for something good!
As such, Rezen's eyes flashed with coldness. His mana gathered at the tip of his wand, forming a solar orb that illuminated the surroundings and raised the temperature.
"Who are you people?" Rezen asked coldly. To people who want to take his life... he would always return the favor more than tenfold.
"We are people that came here to kill you"
"You shouldn't have offended someone you cannot afford to offend"
"Tsk, tsk, you poor brat, you will die today!"
Despite the fact that Rezen was easily able to block their initial attack, the three assassins are still full of confidence. Rezen is at the 8th cycle of the Junior Rank but so was each of them.
With three against one wherein their cultivation ranks are equal, the one with the numerical advantage would win, right?
Not to mention, the three of them are veteran mages. They are not like Rezen who just reached the 8th cycle and should still be solidifying his cultivation realm.
"To kill me, I'm afraid, just the three of you are not enough" Reze sneered while shaking his head.n/o/vel/b//in dot c//om
He might have just reached the 8th cycle but was he a normal 8th cycle mage? Of course not!
He is not afraid to fight multiple mages at his level!
With a wave of his hand, Rezen threw the solar orb at one of the assassins, and the assassin, in confidence used his dagger to destroy the solar orb.
As soon as the metal dagger and solar orb met each other, the latter exploded.
Boom!
That poor mage was surprised at the power behind that single solar orb. His body was thrown in the air, his back hitting the barrier.
If the three of them hadn't erected the isolation barrier, that poor mage would have been thrown outside of the tent and they would have been discovered.
"Don't underestimate him!" One of the three said after seeing that their companion was injured in one move.
He gathered mana into his sword, ready to use a magic skill when the ground he was standing on suddenly opened up and swallowed his body.
He was about to use his sword to shatter the ground but that is when Belazark opened its mouth.
"HISS!!"
The little snake's jaw released a dark wave that spread inside the whole tent. This dark wave didn't harm anyone or anything as it wasn't a physical attack.
This attack targeted the soul itself!
With the number of spirit plants that Rezen fed this silly snake, it also reached the high cycle of the Junior Rank. It would be a waste of resources if it can't even use at least a single attack to be helpful in moments like this.
With the dark wave targeting not the physical body but the soul itself, the assassins momentarily stopped moving. This gave Rezen the chance to completely engulf the mage holding a sword with earth, only leaving the poor mage's head exposed.
As for the mage holding a lance, he also stopped moving and Rezen threw a beam of sunlight that hit him on the chest.
Just like the mage wielding daggers, the lance user was thrown in the air, a bloody wound appearing on his chest as he coughed out a mouthful of blood.
In just a short exchange, Rezen was able to immobilize three mages in the same realm as he was. Well, part of the reason is the snake he raised.
Its attack was also very powerful, able to stop the movement of the enemies. In a battle between mages, even a single second is enough to decide life and death.
"Now then, shall we begin the interrogation?" Rezen said darkly while waving his magic wand again.
On the two assassins that he sent flying away, vines grew that wrapped tightly around their bodies. These vines have sharp thorns that rub and pierce against their skin, causing them to bleed heavily.
The wounds caused by the vines were not deep but there were many of them. If this continued, they would certainly die of blood loss.
As for the mage engulfed in the earth, Rezen controlled the earth to slowly tighten, and if this goes on, in time, this mage's entire body except for the head would definitely be squeezed into meat paste.
"Should you speak now or should I have to resort to violence?" Rezen asked in a calm yet eerie tone but it seemed like the assassins have some 'etiquette'.
"You won't get any information from us!"
"We are not afraid of torture!"
"Curse you!"
The three as expected refused to answer and Rezen just gave them a smile.
"Torture? No, this is not torture" Rezen said while shaking his head. He went back to his meditative posture, about to continue cultivating when Belazark asked him a question.
"Master, aren't you going to kill them?" The snake asked "innocently' and Rezen just smiled before closing his eyes and resuming his cultivation.
Silence reigned inside the tent and the assassins were confused. In this situation, shouldn't Rezen hurt them to extract information as to who sent the three of them?
What is he doing? Why is he not asking questions? Why is he just cultivating?
The three were completely confused, sensing that something was amiss but they could not pinpoint it. They can only throw curses at Rezen, confident that he won't kill them.
Without concrete evidence, Rezen cannot escape punishment if he were to kill a fellow human mage. Even if the three of them indeed tried to kill Rezen, since they failed, they would only be punished.
Humanity's need for mages in recent times reached an all-time high due to the war happening. Even if a mage commits a crime, they can be pardoned and would just be assigned to a more dangerous battlefield where the death toll is high.
As such, the three of them are confident that Rezen won't kill them. However, they were soon filled with horror. They realized why Rezen was not trying to torture them.
No, in fact, he was torturing them just not in a direct way!
Two of them have thorny vines on their bodies that constantly wiggle, cutting their flesh and causing them to bleed. It doesn't matter if this happens for a minute or two, with their vitality, they certainly wouldn't die.
However, the more time that passed, the more blood they lost. They can slowly but surely sense their vitality slipping away. If they continue to lose blood little by little like this...
The two shuddered, Rezen was not being direct in his torture because he was slowly letting them feel the approach of death.
Dying in one stroke without being able to react was definitely better than constantly losing blood and slowly experiencing the feeling of dying.
People might not be afraid of dying but if you can clearly feel its close approach, things would become different. One cannot help but become fearful.
